The legend of Queen Veeravati is the most well-known of them. According to legend, out of love for their sister, her seven brothers deceived her into breaking her first Karva Chauth by misrepresenting a mirror as the moon. Veeravati received the news of her husband’s passing shortly after breaking the fast, which grieved her. She continued to cry until a goddess showed her and revealed the truth about what her brothers had done. The Lord of Death, Yama, was compelled to release the soul of her husband after she urged Veeravati to finish the ceremony.
The Mahabharata associates this day with the occasion when Arjuna abandoned the other Pandavas and traveled to the Nilgiris. She performed all the ceremonies as he had instructed, which enabled the Pandavas to resolve all their issues.
Other origin stories for this event include those involving Satyavan and his wife Savitri as well as a Pati-vrata woman named Karwa.
