This festival is a deeply spiritual occasion celebrated by Sikhs and devotees around the world. In 2024, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be observed on Friday, November 15th, with devotees gathering to honor his teachings of compassion, humility, and devotion to God.

Who Was Guru Nanak?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi, which is now known as Nankana Sahib in modern-day Pakistan. He grew up questioning the societal and religious norms of his time, promoting instead a way of life focused on equality, compassion, and devotion to God. Through his teachings, he inspired a spiritual movement that ultimately laid the foundation for Sikhism, a monotheistic faith centered on the principles of oneness, selfless service, and equality. Guru Nanak’s philosophy continues to influence millions, emphasizing that God resides within everyone, and humanity should treat all with respect and kindness.

The Spiritual Importance of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Prakash Utsav, celebrates the enlightening wisdom that Guru Nanak brought to the world. Shaligram, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Tulasi get married in a revered ceremony on this day. Prosperity, tranquility, and divine benefits are thought to accompany this holy marriage. The Padma Purana and Brahmavaivarta Purana, two ancient Hindu texts, are the origin of the Tulsi Vivah narrative.

What is Tulsi Vivah?

In Hindi, vivah signifies marriage. The marriage ceremony between Tulsi (Holy Basil) and Lord Krishna is known as Tulsi Vivah. Participating in the Tulsi Vivah puja is thought to bring blessings for a happy married life, prosperity, and happiness.

The Hindu month of Kartik, which often falls between October and November on the English calendar, is when the ceremonies are performed, and Tulsi is thought to represent the goddess Lakshmi.

According to the Hindu calendar, the wedding season begins on the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight, known as “Dev Uthni Ekadashi.” This marks the conclusion of the four-month Chaturmaas period, during which Lord Vishnu is thought to be sleeping. Following the same traditions and ceremonies as a Hindu wedding, Tulsi Vivah is held similarly.

Tulsi Vivah Story, Significance and Importance

This wedding has a fascinating backstory that is replete with devotion and divine significance. Because of Vrinda’s devotion to Lord Vishnu, the demon King Jalandhar, to whom she was married, became not only strong but unbeatable. Even when it came to fighting the gods, he was unbeatable. Lord Vishnu pretended to be Jalandhar and deceived Vrinda to restore the world balance and stop a demon king from growing too powerful. This ultimately resulted in Jalandhar’s defeat and death.

When Vrinda realized the truth, she cursed Lord Vishnu to change into Shaligram, a black stone that Hindus still adore today. Vrinda sacrificed herself in a fire after cursing the lord, and the Tulsi plant grew from her ashes. Her devotion touched Lord Visnu, who proclaimed that the Tulsi plant would be revered and worshipped as a goddess going forward and that it would be married to him annually in the form of Tulsi Vivah.

  • Following the marriage ceremonies, a special vegetarian lunch known as bhog is prepared and served.
  • Both Lord Vishnu and Tulsi are bathed and garlanded in the evening.
  • To represent the couple’s union, a yellow thread is knotted around them.
  • A priest or any woman in the home, except widows, may execute the rite.
  • The couple is doused with vermillion-infused rice while mantras are shouted.

Before beginning the Puja, it is important to thoroughly clean your house. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi only enters homes that are clean and well-organized. You may also decorate your house with rangoli, diyas, and flowers to welcome her.

2. Set Up the Puja Altar

Create a sacred space in your home for the Puja by setting up the altar. Place a clean cloth on a table or the floor and place idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on it. Surround the idols with small oil lamps (diyas), incense sticks, and flowers.

3. Offerings for the Puja

Prepare offerings such as sweets (ladoos, pedas, or kheer), fruits, and nuts to offer to the deities. You should also keep items like betel leaves, turmeric, kumkum (vermilion), sandalwood paste, and rice for the rituals. Keep some coins, as well, to symbolize wealth.

4. Ganesh Puja

The Diwali Puja starts by invoking Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Light a diya and incense sticks, and offer flowers and sweets to Lord Ganesha. Chant the Ganesh mantra:

“Om Gan Ganapataye Namah.”

5. Lakshmi Puja

After performing Ganesh Puja, proceed with Lakshmi Puja. Light the main diya and offer flowers, sweets, and coins to Goddess Lakshmi. You can chant the following mantra to seek her blessings:

“Om Hreem Shreem Lakshmibhyo Namaha.”

6. Kuber Puja

In some households, Kuber, the god of wealth, is also worshipped along with Goddess Lakshmi. You can place a few coins near the altar and offer prayers to Kuber for wealth and prosperity.

7. Aarti and Prasad Distribution

Conclude the Puja with the Aarti of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Distribute the prasad (offering) among family members and guests, spreading the blessings of the deities.

Diwali is a time for shopping and gifting, but try to avoid taking on unnecessary debt. Spend within your means, and focus more on thoughtful gifts than extravagant purchases. Financial discipline during Diwali ensures long-term prosperity.

3. Perform Charity

Sharing with others during Diwali can increase the blessings you receive. Donate food, clothing, or money to those in need. This act of kindness is said to attract positive energy and blessings from the universe.

4. Focus on Family and Relationships

Diwali is not just a festival of wealth, but also of love and relationships. Take time to bond with your family and friends, strengthen your connections, and spread joy in your social circles.

The festival of Chhath Puja, fundamental to the Sanatan Dharma, is about to begin. This event, which is mostly commemorated in Bihar with unparalleled enthusiasm, has spread throughout the country and is now observed nationwide.

Chhath is not just any festival; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the sun, where devotees honor both its rising and setting avatars. It is astounding how devoted the adherents are, especially the women. They fast for more than 24 hours during the Nirjala festival, asking for the health and longevity of their offspring.

Come explore the rich tapestry of rituals, importance, and celebrations surrounding Chhath Puja in 2024. This book is your lighthouse into the brilliant world of Chhath, regardless matter how deeply ingrained its customs are in you or if you’re just an interested observer.

What is Chhath Puja?

Chhath Puja is a four-day event with strong spiritual overtones that are ingrained in Hindu tradition. This holy festival is observed every year on the Shashthi of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, according to the Panchang.

The prayers for long life, health, and a bright future for one’s offspring are the core of Chhath Puja. Known as one of the hardest fasts, followers immerse themselves in a strict 36-hour fast while following strict rules. Amazingly, during this time, not a single drop of water touches their lips for more than twenty-four hours.

Although the primary fast is kept on Shashthi Tithi, the celebration officially begins on Chaturthi and ends on Saptami Tithi, with the sunrise offering of Arghya. So, in 2024, when does this spiritual trip start? Let’s investigate further.

Chhath Puja 2024 Day 3: Sandhya Arghya – November 7, 2024, Thursday

Chhath Puja 2024 Day 4: Usha Arghya – November 8, 2024, Friday

Special Rituals for Chhath

The following rituals—also known as Surya Shashthi, Chhathi, Dala Chhath, and Prathihar—are performed during the four days of the Chhath Puja festival celebration.

  • The first day of Chhath Puja 2024 is called Nahaye Khaye, which translates as “to bath and eat.” On this day, those who follow the fast take a sacred dip in a river, pond, or other body of water. In the afternoon, a vegetarian dinner is made and served as a bhog after the house and its surroundings are cleaned.
  • On the second day, Kharna, the devotee observes the Nirjala fast. Consequently, no water is drunk, and later in the evening, a unique Prasad consisting of rice, milk, and jaggery is created. The Chhati Maiyya is then given this prasad, along with fruits, spices, betel leaves, and green ginger, and it is shared with friends and family.
  • The third day is Chhath Puja Sandhya Arghya. Arghya is offered to Lord Sun on this day. To decorate a soop, use fruits, rice laddoos, and thekua. Then devotees and their family members would deliver the Arghya to the Sun God. During this rite, you should worship Chhathi Mata while wearing a soop and offer the Lord milk and water. At night, gather with others to sing devotional songs to Shashthi Devi and to hear the Chhath Vrat Katha.
  • Usha Arghya, in which the Arghya is offered to the rising Sun, is done on the last and fourth days of the Chhath Puja 2024. The Vrattis visit the riverbanks on this day with their family, carrying out the ritual with great intensity and dedication. They offer prayers to Chhathi Maiyya and Lord Sun for joy, health, and wealth. Natives who are fasting break their fast by consuming jaggery and ginger.

The best day to perform a pooja for Lord Sun is also Chhath. It helps strengthen the Sun in your birth chart, enhancing its positive energy and protecting you from its detrimental consequences. To get Lord Surya’s heavenly blessings and bring luck into your life, perform a personalized Vedic puja.

How Do People Celebrate Chhath Puja?

Chhath Puja is a four-day spiritual journey with distinct rituals and meanings; it is not only a celebration. The celebration officially begins on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month with “Nahay-Khay.” On the second day of the festivities, believers observe “Kharna,” a day marked by unique traditions.

The primary Chhath fast is observed on Shashthi Tithi, which marks the festival’s climax. ‘Arghya’, a symbol of the cycle of life and destruction, is handed to the setting sun on this significant day. On Saptami, the festival comes to a close with the offering of “Arghya,” a symbol of rebirth and fresh starts, to the rising sun. It is only after this final devotion that the grandeur of the Chhath Puja 2024 reaches its fullness.
