The ancient Vedic Scriptures contain the shloka that follows, which clarifies the highest position bestowed upon a teacher or guru:
Gururbrahmā Gururviṣhṇu Gururdēvōh Mahēśhvaraḥ…I
Guru Sākṣhāta Paraṁ Brahmah Tasmai Shrī Guravē Namaḥ…II
Meaning: You are like the gods, instructor. You are the God of the Gods, Lord Shiva, and you are Lord Vishnu. For me, you are Lord Brahma and the ultimate being, oh teacher. I therefore bow before you, oh holy instructor.
Guru Purnima is observed on the Full Moon day in Shukla Paksha, in the Lunar month of Ashad. The terms Gu and Ru in the word “guru” denote ignorance and darkness, respectively, and eradication or removal. Thus, the Guru is the one who gives us wisdom, dispels the darkness of ignorance from our existence, and infuses positivity into our bodies and minds.

Every person on the planet owes Saint Vyasa something for his labors, as it is stated that the Guru Vyasa composed all four of the Vedas that Lord Brahma recited. He penned multiple Puranas as well. And ever since then, a day known as “Guru Purnima” has been set aside to honor the Gurus. Because there is a full moon on this day, the term “Purnima” is employed. It is deeply significant in both the worlds of the past and present. People of all castes and backgrounds offer their guru’s prayers on this day, which is dedicated to honoring them for the knowledge they have imparted to their students.
What Should You Do On This Day?
- Get to know the individual you regard as your guru.
- According to the Vedic texts, Shri Aadi Shankaracharya is regarded as the Jagatguru or teacher of all. This day is yours to praise Him.
- Worshipping Guru Dattatreya, the Guru’s Guru, is also appropriate. Another option is to recite Dutt Baavani.
- You might worship Lord Jupiter on this day. In Vedic Astrology, Jupiter (Brihaspati) is referred to be the Guru—the teacher or the symbol of higher learning and aspirations.
Guru Purnima 2024 puja procedure:
- After having a morning bath and completing his daily routine, one should wear clean garments on the day of Guru Purnima.
- Install the idol or portrait of Vyas ji after sprinkling Ganga water to purify the area of worship.
- Next, place a garland or fresh flowers on the portrait of Vyas Ji, and then proceed to see your guru.
- A high-adorned seat should be made for one’s Guru, and a garland of flowers should be presented.
- After presenting garments, fruits, flowers, and a garland, one should now ask for their blessings by presenting Dakshina under their ability.
