Karwa Chauth 2024: A Complete Guide to the Fast and Puja Vidhi

Karwa Chauth 2024: Married women fast without drinking water from sunrise until moonrise on Karwa Chauth, a one-day celebration, in hopes of prolonging their husbands’ lives and ensuring perpetual wealth for the family. The festival is celebrated with great fanfare and on a large scale in the northern Indian states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. The festival is held in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartik (October – November), on the fourth day following the full moon.

Married women observe specific traditions and fast strictly on Karwa Chauth morning. Women do not break their fast until they have seen the Moon and made their sacrifices to her. During Karwa Chauth, one must refrain from eating or drinking anything after sunrise till the moon is visible in the night. Worshipped and revered are Lord Shiva and His household, which includes Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. Karwa Chauth falls on the same day as Sankashti Chaturthi, when people observe another important fast in honor of Lord Ganesha.

How to Celebrate Karwa Chauth

To commemorate Karva Chauth, various cultures have different traditions, however, some rites are universal. The customs are:

Fasting: Women fast to ensure the long life and safety of their husbands.

Food: Eating Sargi, which consists of fruits, dried fruits, milk, and other high-energy meals, is a ritual that takes place early in the morning.

Clothes: Women dress traditionally, accessorizing with mehendi, sindoor, and bangles.

Prayer: Married women offer prayers to the Karva Chauth Mata and hear the Karwa Chauth tales.

Breaking the fast: Women donate water to the moon after gazing at it through a Chhalni, or sieve, in the evening. After that, the husband breaks the fast by giving the wife the same water and candy.

Karva Chauth Songs

People sing regional songs during Karwa Chauth puja like

“Veeron Kudiye Karwada, Sarv Suhagan Karwada,

Ae Katti Na Ateri Naa, Kumbh Chrakhra Feri Naa.”

This song explains the safety measures that ladies should take when fasting.

Concerning Sargi Ritual

Another kind of Karwa Chauth rite is sargi, in which the mother-in-law blesses her daughter-in-law. The mother-in-law typically makes the bride’s feni, which the women consume before dawn. The bride just needs to do this rite by following her mother-in-law’s directions. She is permitted to take food and/or beverages during the day if her mother-in-law permits it. This implies that she can observe the ritual provided she is permitted to have a drink or food during the fast.

Astrological Significance of Karwa Chauth 2024

The celebration is held on Sankashti Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month. Married women observe a day-long nirjala vrat and practice sixteen-fold worship, or Shodasopachar, to honor the rising moon on this holiday, which has great significance. Astrologically speaking, this is supposed to bolster the moon in a person’s natal chart and improve their married life. Additionally, it is believed that honoring Goddess Parvati during the Karwa Chauth dates and times will placate her and grant her blessings for the longevity of the devotees’ married lives.
