Parsva Ekadashi 2024: Spiritual Benefits, Date, and Rituals

Parsva Ekadashi 2024, which falls on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of Bhadrapada month in the Shukla Paksha according to the Hindu calendar, is considered one of the most auspicious and virtue-filled celebrations. This auspicious holiday occurs in either August or September based on the Gregorian calendar.

This Hindu festival is celebrated during “Dakshinayana Punyakalam,” which symbolizes the gods’ nighttime hours. When Parsva Ekadashi occurs during the “Chaturmas” season, it is considered auspicious. According to Hindu mythology, it represents the moment that Lord Vishnu rested and moved from his previous left posture to his current right one. As a result, it is also known as “Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi.” On this occasion, Lord Vamana, who is thought to be the incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu, is honored in some locations.

Significance of Parsva Ekadashi

Parsva Ekadashi holds a special place in the Hindu tradition, as it marks a significant event in the life of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Vishnu, who is in a deep sleep during the Chaturmas period, turns from his left side to his right side. This act of turning, known as ‘Parivartini,’ is what gives the day its name, Parsva Ekadashi.

The significance of this day is further highlighted by its association with Lord Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vamana subdued the demon king Bali, who had become invincible and was threatening the cosmic order. This event is commemorated during the Parsva Ekadashi, reminding devotees of the triumph of good over evil and the importance of dharma (righteousness) in life.

In addition, Parsva Ekadashi is also considered an auspicious day for making charitable donations. Devotees often engage in acts of charity, such as feeding the poor and offering donations to temples, as a way to seek blessings and enhance their spiritual merit.
